The Fig Tree
I'm always fascinated by the growth of the fig tree in our yard. In order to get the best quality figs, I prune it severely. Then it produces the little buds that turn into figs and also the leaves that sprout into new limbs. If all goes well, by the end of the season it will have produced about seven feet (over 2 meters) of new growth and about 200 figs.
The Lord has to prune us severely, too. When he's done pruning, what he did may look too severe, but the end result is fruit for him.
And have you forgotten the exhortation that addresses you as sons? "My son, do not regard lightly the discipline of the Lord, nor be weary when reproved by him. For the Lord disciplines the one he loves, and chastises every son whom he receives."
--Hebrews 12:5-6, ESV
