Spirit-changed

There's a word heard by outward ear that speaks sharp truth.
There's a word heard by inward ear that calls with power--
    irresistible power.
The one Spirit speaks through both--
Outwardly, inwardly--
Until faith wakes
And faith takes
The gift that lifts
The dead to life.
Awake, alive, reborn--
Soul's fresh morn--
The same one Spirit's
Living, flowing, blowing
Always now from down inside
The word-washed heart.

The Spirit wakes us,
Remakes us,
Reshapes us
Until, like him,
We're holy,
All for the glory
Of God the Father
Through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Jesus answered, "Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit..." (John 3:5-6 ESV)

Buy Back the Time

Buy back the time.
Buy back the time.
The devil owns it if you let it go.

Time slips away
Day after day
Unless you buy it back. Don't let it go.

Buy back the time.
Buy every time.
The Lord will use it in his glorious plan.

Buy back the time.
Buy back the time.
Until Christ Jesus comes, keep buying time.

See then that you walk circumspectly, not as fools but as wise,  redeeming the time, because the days are evil. (Ephesians 5:15-16 NKJV)

Testing

Temptation tantalizes
And tells as many lies as
There are weaknesses in me.

But Jesus energizes
And holiness arises.
By his power, I am free.

Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. (James 1:2-3 ESV)

Like every week, this one has had its trials for me: normal temptations on every side, a concussion, and a fellow who hates Jesus threatening me online that "we'll kill all of you." Through it all, the Lord is abundantly faithful, abundantly worth knowing and following.

How Can It Be

How can it be that Christ would give
His very life, a sacrifice,
That rebels might be saved and life--
Redeemed at such a dreadful price?

How can it be that God would die
For those whose sin was blood-stained-red--
That He would lift them up on high--
Alive and clean instead of dead?

I can't explain this massive grace
That flows from Christ unceasingly.
I only know that in his face
Is holy love that rescues me.

Written March 9, 2014; Founders Baptist Church, Spring, Texas.

But God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. (Romans 5:8 ESV)

Enoch

Enoch simply walked with God,
The God he knew was there.
Enoch simply walked with God.
Then Enoch was not there.
Enoch spent his life with God,
As simple as each breath.
Enoch spent his life with God.
Then Enoch bypassed death.

Enoch walked with God, and he was not, for God took him. - Genesis 5:24

Lost Cause

Image: Grave with a Confederate flag.

Grieving for a long-lost cause
      Will not work,
      Will not help,
Just ignores most-certain laws.

Weeping for the past that's gone
      Has an end
      Has to stop--
Just obscures each fresh new dawn.

Seize tomorrow while you may.
      Grab for hope.
      Grab for truth.
Seize tomorrow; live today.

When one rules justly over men, ruling in the fear of God, he dawns on them like the morning light, like the sun shining forth on a cloudless morning, like rain that makes grass to sprout from the earth. (From 2 Samuel 23:3-4 ESV)

I understand people's desire to honor the dead, including those who fought on the losing side of a war. Yet race-based slavery was evil, and it was one of the main things that the Confederacy was fighting for.
