Back to Sodom?

Image of man from https://www.flickr.com/photos/vincepal/3633230337/ . Used by permission.

Back to Sodom? Back to sin?
No, my darling, don't look back!
Back to all that ugly sin?
Never! Run! And don't look back!

Back to luxury? To lies?
That world's dying, judged and killed.
Forward, forward is the prize.
All God said will be fulfilled.

Back to Sodom? Back to sin?
No, my loved ones, don't look back!
Back to lusts, all dead within?
Never! Never! Don't look back.

But Lot's wife, behind him, looked back, and she became a pillar of salt. (Gen 19:26)

Resurrection Day

Christ's mighty resurrection
   Startles us to say
We're at an intersection--
   Death and life--today.

So, will we turn and follow
   Christ in paths of life,
Or still be empty, hollow,
   Dead in sin and strife?

The choice of most is darkness
   Blacker than the night
Instead of free forgiveness--
   Christ and truth and light.

Now, what will be your answer?
   Tell me what you'll say--
Rejecting Christ in anger?
   Or life in Him today?

Let all the house of Israel therefore know for certain that God has made him both Lord and Christ, this Jesus whom you crucified...Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. (Acts 2:36, 38 ESV)

If you think you can merely give no answer, listen to this sermon from my pastor today (available in video or just audio--also available in Spanish).

On the Road to Emmaus

Image: Jan Wildens, Landscape with Christ and His Disciples On the Road to Emmaus

When your faith lies shattered, broken—
     Listen. Listen to the Savior.
When you’re walking, going nowhere—
     Listen. Listen to the Savior.
When your Bible’s all a puzzle—
     Listen. Listen to the Savior.
When you’re lost, just speculating—
     Listen. Listen to the Savior.
When you’ve reached your destination—
     Listen. Listen to the Savior.
When you’re ready to be eating—
     Listen. Listen to the Savior.
When you’re sure at last you’ve heard him—
Quickly! Run and tell the others!
He’s Messiah! He is risen! —
Trust him! Jesus is the Savior.

That very day two of them were going to a village named Emmaus...While they were talking and discussing together, Jesus himself drew near and went with them. (Luke 24:13-15)

Conquering My Sin

Lord, I'll never conquer
Even one slight sin--
Not in my own power,
Not in my own pride.

But, Lord, you have conquered
All my ugly sin--
And I, too, will conquer
If I'm at your side.

Lord, you are my goodness--
Holiness within--
By your mercy flowing,
Cleansing me inside.

For if you live according to the flesh you will die, but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. (Romans 8:14 ESV)

Written while with a group of guys studying chapter 7 of John Owen's Of the Mortification of Sin in Believers.

Palm Sunday

Image from

The King of the Jews
Rides into town.
No galloping steed;
No golden crown.

He sits on a colt,
A donkey's foal--
An odd way to reach
His kingly goal.

No army attends
This head of state.
How soon will he kill
All those we hate?

The children adore--
They sing his praise.
The leaders deplore
Such bold displays.

They'll see that he's dead
Within a week.
It shouldn't be hard--
They've heard he's meek.

They'll lie and they'll kill--
His death their prize--
But little they know...
This king will rise!

His hour's not yet
But soon, the news:
He's Lord over all;
And King of Jews.

Jesus Enters Jerusalem:
They brought the donkey and the colt and placed their cloaks on them, and he sat on them.
A very large crowd spread their cloaks on the road. Others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road. The crowds that went ahead of him and those following kept shouting, “Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest!” (Matthew 21:7-9 NET)

Mechanical

Monstrous mechanical men
Stride across the landscape
Like other-worldly robots.

They haven't noticed me yet,
And I want to keep it that way.

I hear no buzz,
But wonder about escaping electrons
And whether steel men sleep.

The name of the LORD is a strong tower;
the righteous man runs into it and is safe.

--Proverbs 18:10 ESV
