The Christ of Peace

In the chaos, Christ brings peace--
Peace with God and peace to give
Those around so they may live.
Jesus is himself our peace.

Will you trust this Christ today?
Trust him, and your soul is freed.
Trust him, and he'll meet each need.
He is peace--the life, the way.

Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you.
Not as the world gives do I give to you.
Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.
                --Jesus (see John 14:27 ESV)

One Best Gift

One best gift this Christmas
Prompts a million more
One best gift this Christmas--
Not from any store

This best gift of Christmas
Lasts while ages run
This best gift of Christmas
Is God's precious Son

Take the gift this Christmas
Jesus from God's heart
Take the gift this Christmas
And new life will start

But when the fullness of time had come,
God sent forth his Son,
born of woman,
born under the law,
to redeem those who were under the law,
so that we might receive adoption as sons.

My Earnings

I have earned not grace but wrath
God's fire that ever burns but not consumes
So pain keeps gnawing on

I've been proud and stubborn too
A prig with pride in self-made laws
That I alone kept well

Only grace could rescue me
God's goodness bright and undeserved
Christ Jesus yes for me

For the Son of God, Jesus Christ, whom we proclaimed among you, Silvanus and Timothy and I, was not Yes and No, but in him it is always Yes. For all the promises of God find their Yes in him. That is why it is through him that we utter our Amen to God for his glory.

We're called to be saints--
   Not made of plaster,
      stone or stained glass;
   Not with bright halos
      shiny and flat.

We're called to be saints--
   Holy in Jesus,
      clean, set apart,
   Serving him only
      with a new heart.

...To the church of God that is in Corinth, to those sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints together with all those who in every place call upon the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, both their Lord and ours:

Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

Prayer in the Gloom

Our God, your glory's just as great
On the gray and gloomy days
When hope is weak and has to wait
And we're puzzled by your ways.

We know the waiting's just a test
That will show our faith in you.
Your ways aren't clear, but they are best.
In the end, you're always true.

Our troubles burn and press and pierce,
But we're made for things above.
These clouds so dark and wide and fierce
Come with linings of your love.

You lift me up on the wind; you make me ride on it,
and you toss me about in the roar of the storm.
(Job 30:22 ESV)

Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.

Is your world buffeted by stormy trials today? If so, I've posted this for you--and for myself when those days come to me. Our hopes and our joy must focus not on our circumstances, but on our faithful Lord.

The Washing Word

The washing word
When truly heard
Can pierce the heart
Where sin would start
To slay the soul
We thought was whole.

Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her, that he might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word...

(Ephesians 5:25-26 ESV)

All the World's Allurements

All the world's allurements,
All the pomp and pride,
All the wealth,
All the health,
By themselves are merely death.

True life flows from Jesus--
Flows from him to him.
Run from sin.
Run to him.
Run! Find life--eternal breath.

And if it is evil in your eyes to serve the LORD, choose this day whom you will serve...
But as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.

(Joshua 24:15 ESV)

The Smith

The smith heats the iron
And beats the iron
Seemingly without mercy
Until it's shaped to serve him well.

The Lord heats his own
And beats his own
Seemingly without mercy
Until we're shaped to serve him well.

There's reason for heating
And reason for beating.
The one who heats and beats will stop
As soon as the shaping's done.

The Weed

The brave weed seed
Found a crack of soil--
Not leafy loam,
But dirt blown in
Within an asphalt lot.

And so it grew between the cars,
A little spot of green.

I could have pulled
That stubborn weed.
It's just a weed,
Yet brave.

I left it there,
That little weed,
And it left me
Pondering my lot.

His heart was courageous in the ways of the Lord. ... (Jeremiah 17:6)

One Fear

One fear: The LORD.
His word is law.

    His anger's pure.
    It fierce. It's sure
    To save the meek,
    The kind, the weak.
    He slays the strong,
    Oppressive throng.
    Against his plans
    No man can stand.

One fear: The LORD.
His word is law.

But you, you are to be feared!
  Who can stand before you
when once your anger is roused?
      (Psalm 76:7 ESV)

Honest work done well
For the Lord (not self)
Offers the sweetest reward.

Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ. (Colossians 3:23-24 ESV)

I saw these gloves where a workman had left them. Maybe he was having lunch.

A Prayer of Confession for the Church

Father, there are secret sins
Corroding us within,
Eating holes beneath our holiness--
Gnawing termites
Hidden by the shell
Of our respectability.

It's a mercy when you lay them bare
So they can be killed.

Slash them, pierce them with the sword
Hidden in your word.
Burn them with the light of truth.
Burn them in fires of repentance.

They may leave some fearsome holes.
We may hardly know
How we'll live without them--
Who we are without them.
Fill those holes with yourself.
Flood us with your Holy Spirit.

Cancel the devil's plans.
Do your work today
In us, your church,
Through us, your church,
By your own power
And for your own glory.

In Jesus' name we pray.

If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. If we say we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us. (1 John 1:9-10 ESV)

God Our Joy

God of pleasure, depths of joy
All surround your glorious throne;
Flow forever to your own.

There's no thing--no earthly toy
That can meet our hearts' desire.
Toys all perish in your fire.

May we turn to you for joy--
Humble hearts, submitted, still,
Eager now to do your will.

You make known to me the path of life;
   in your presence there is fullness of joy;
at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.
       (Psalm 16:11 ESV)

Another World

I'm waiting for another world--
A world renewed, remade,
Among the stars unfurled
With brightness, never shade.

The Lord will be the light!
No sin, no guilt, no shame,
No wrong, but only right--
Pure joy in Jesus' name.

No longer will you have the sun for light by day,
Nor for brightness will the moon give you light;
But you will have the LORD for an everlasting light,
And your God for your glory. (Isaiah 60:19 NASB)

Christian Relationships - Connected in Christ

Broken people,
    Depths of grace...
Hurts wiped out, we're
    Face to face.

Bound together
    All our days,
Washed and filled, we're
    One in praise.

The glory that you have given me I have given to them,
that they may be one even as we are one,
I in them and you in me,
that they may become perfectly one,
so that the world may know that you sent me
and loved them even as you loved me.

--Jesus in John 17:22-23

Do you view your relationships as a way to glorify the Lord? Do you treasure and protect the unity that there is in Christ?

If you'd like to work on that, try working through the book Change and Your Relationships A Mess Worth Making, by Timothy S. Lane and Paul David Tripp. It's a study guide with leader's notes. The book is fairly costly, but is quite good. You'd want the paper-and-ink book, since it's a workbook. We've been studying it at church.

Eat this bit of bread.
Drink this cup of wine.
Blood of the divine--
Jesus dying, dead.

Mysteries are these,
Yet this much is known:
Christ makes us his own.
Comprehension flees.

All our debt is paid.
Holy sacrifice
Won't be needed twice:
Sins on him are laid.

For I received from the Lord what I also delivered to you, that the Lord Jesus on the night when he was betrayed took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it, and said, “This is my body which is for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” In the same way also he took the cup, after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.” For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord's death until he comes. (1 Corinthians 11:23-26 ESV)

Jesus is not continuing to be sacrificed every time we eat the bread and drink the wine or juice. See Hebrews 10:14. Yet he meets us in these simple items that speak of his death.

When I'm Disrespected

Lord, remind me…you are king,
And you’re worth my everything.
All my money, all my gold,
Counts for naught once all is told.
All my honors, all my fame,
ALL should go to Jesus’ name.
Like him, may I now forgive
EVERYONE, then truly live,
Since my savior died for me
And then rose—now I am free.

..If anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also.
(Matthew 5:39 ESV)

Read Matthew 5:39-42 at the link and remember that Jesus gave up his reputation, his possessions, and his right to control his own destiny, all for sinners like you..and like me.

All My Goodness

All my goodness flows from you.
    You have made me new.
All my gifts have come from you--
     Strength for all I do.
All my hope is fixed on you--
     All my striving, too.
Mighty Jesus, you are Lord,
     And I live for you.

I have been crucified with Christ.
It is no longer I who live,
but Christ who lives in me.
And the life I now live in the flesh
I live by faith in the Son of God,
who loved me and gave himself for me. (Galatians 2:20 ESV)

A Solid Wall

A solid wall
No way around
No way through
You're blocked

But you see a handle there
And realize
That someone else has found a way
A hidden door
And you go through

(See John 10:9 and 14:6.)

Pride and Unity

Our wills go astray.
Each wants his own way.
Each picks his own side.

O Lord, make us one.
May your will be done.
Burn up all our pride.

You,  Lord, make us new,
One people in you--
Draw us to your side.

So your truth will flow
And your praises grow
And spread far and wide.

...eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.
(Ephesians 4:3 ESV)

As the rainbow's many colors make one excellent thing, so the varied people in the Lord's church make one body. We must not pursue the false unity that would bind us to every heresy that claims to be Christian, but we must pursue and preserve the true unity that comes from the Lord.

A Lone Bird

A lone bird
Sings a glorious, haunting song.
Just how or where it learned it
Is as unknown as the song,
But the beauty lifts a sagging soul
And hints of things

Praise the LORD...
Mountains and all hills, fruit trees and all cedars!
Beasts and all livestock, creeping things and flying birds!

(Psalm 148:7-10 ESV)

The Church Prays

Called and chosen
Fresh, not frozen
Best and least
Royal priests

Temple stones
Not alone
Deeply bless

You also, as living stones, are built up as a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.
--1 Peter 2:5, WEB

But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for God's own possession, that you may proclaim the excellence of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light...
--1 Peter 2:9 WEB

Give me a hunger, my Lord, for your word,
A hunger for doing your will.
Give me a hunger for truth and for life
That lasts, though my body is killed.

Give me a hunger for lost, broken souls,
A hunger to see them restored.
Give me a hunger for seeing your face--
To know you! Amazing reward!

Blessed are those
who hunger and thirst for righteousness,
for they shall be satisfied.

Don't let your eyes
Proudly despise
Brothers who eat
Unholy meat,
Brothers who praise
On the wrong days,
Or have a rule
That is not cool,
Or have a law
You think is raw,
Whose actions might
Seem not quite right.

Is this their goal--
With the whole soul,
All of their days
To give Christ praise?
Jesus their Lord
Is their reward,
And they will stand
Just as he planned
On his great Day,
Sins washed away.

For you were called to freedom, brothers. Only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another.  (Galatians 5:13 ESV)

Fence Posts

They say good fences make good neighbors.
I've had neighbors where no fence was needed,
neighbors where a fence kept things wonderful,
and neighbors where a fence or a wall was not enough.

But if there are good fences,
there must be good fence posts.

A fence post isn't glamorous.
It may have knots and scratches and splinters.
It may have a greenish cast from insecticide.
It's not much to look at, so why do we want it?

A good fence post is straight
   and strong
and will last through all sorts of weather.

Lord, make me more like a fence post.
Straighten me.
   Strengthen me.
      Give me endurance
All from your Spirit,
   all for your glory.

Let me and let others forget my glory.
All of it is just glimmers of your great glory.

I don't need to be a giant, towering oak or sequoia.
Make me into a good fence post.

Put on the full armor of God so that you can stand against the tactics of the Devil.
(Ephesians 6:11 HCSB)

Lord, you made the universe
And stretched it out 'til time stood still
And 'til time flew.
You put the waters down below
And put the waters up above
And you were light
And you made light
And shaped the stars
And hung each one.
We can't explain your wisdom's depths,
But know one thing is true:
The universe, the vast expanse--
All hangs, our God, on you.

In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.

And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. And God saw that the light was good. And God separated the light from the darkness. God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And there was evening and there was morning, the first day.

And God said, “Let there be an expanse in the midst of the waters, and let it separate the waters from the waters.” And God made the expanse and separated the waters that were under the expanse from the waters that were above the expanse. And it was so. And God called the expanse Heaven. And there was evening and there was morning, the second day.
(Genesis 1:1-8 ESV)

In him we live and move and have our being. (See Acts 17:28)

He [Jesus] is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power.
(Hebrews 1:3a)

I just finished reading the book Starlight & Time by Russell Humphreys, PhD.  I don't pretend to understand all of the physics and mathematics in the book, but I believe Dr. Humphreys is right about certain basic assumptions which are implicit, not explicit, in his book: 1. The Bible is accurate. 2. Science is useful. 3. When scientific observations and the Bible appear to contradict each other, we should presume that if we understood things fully, there would be no contradiction.

Simple water speaks of blood
That becomes a crimson flood
Washing all our sins away
So we're clean for God's great Day.

Water also speaks of death--
Burial, a lack of breath.
Dead to all our past and sin.
Washed for life to now begin.

This is nothing we can earn.
Without Jesus, we'd all burn
In the fiery depths of hell.
Jesus rescues...saves us well.

He removes the heart of stone;
Makes us flesh for him alone.
Nothing, nothing else will do:
Jesus washes. Make us new.

So those who received his word were baptized, and there were added that day about three thousand souls. (Acts 2:41 ESV)

People argue about the precise relationship between salvation and water baptism. If we affirm and believe what the Bible says, we'll be on safe ground.
1 Peter 3:21 tells us that

  • There's a sense in which water baptism saves us.
  • A water baptism that merely removes dirt from the flesh won't save us.
  • Water baptism that has value is connected with prayer for or from a clean conscience.
We also know from Luke 23:39-43 that
  • The thief on the cross who believed Jesus was saved, and there was no opportunity for water baptism for him.
And we know from Jude 12-13 that
  • There are shepherds (pastors) within the church who are going to utter darkness forever. We can presume that most of these evil shepherds have been baptized, but that their baptism did them no good.
I like to say that water baptism is a divinely-ordained way of expressing initial faith in Jesus who saves.

The Savior Seated

Have you known the savior seated
Far above the earth and sky?
His atoning work's completed.
Now he sits, enthroned on high.

Do you know he's interceding?
   His compassion never dies.
Yes, he hears your heart-felt pleading,
Sees your tears and hears your cries.

Give him honor, praise and glory
   Which his kingly throne demands.
Let your lips tell wide his story.
Bow your heart and lift your hands.

He'll return again in power,
   Not in humble stable-birth.
We don't know the day or hour,
But he comes to rule the earth.

Live or dead, you'll stand before him.
Christ is Lord, and Christ alone.
Tremble now. Submit. Adore him
Lest he curse you from his throne.

But from now on the Son of Man shall be seated at the right hand of the power of God. (Luke 22:69 ESV)

...and what is the immeasurable greatness of his power toward us who believe, according to the working of his great might that he worked in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly places, far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and above every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the one to come. And he put all things under his feet and gave him as head over all things to the church, which is his body, the fullness of him who fills all in all.
(Ephesians 1:19-23 ESV)

Coming Back

Eagerly waiting--
    When will it be?
Jesus, the Savior,
    Will come back for me.
His mighty glory
    I then shall see--
Jesus, the Savior,
    Will come back for me.

Eagerly waiting--
    Will it be long?
While I am waiting,
    My Lord gives a song.
Still I am waiting--
    And hope is strong.
Jesus is coming--
    To Him I belong.

For through the Spirit, by faith, we ourselves eagerly wait for the hope of righteousness. (Galatians 5:5 ESV)

Confession and Hope

We've done wrong
Decades long...
Clutched at pride
As we died.

Shake our bed.
Wake the dead.
Clear off mud
By your blood.

Wash us bright
By your light.
Set our gaze
On your ways.

Be our whole
Aim and goal.
Fix our eyes
On the prize.

Not that I have already obtained this or am already perfect, but I press on to make it my own, because Christ Jesus has made me his own. Brothers, I do not consider that I have made it my own. But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus. God's Gift

Back before time, when space was not space,
Back before all we see was,
The Father foreknew all those he would grace
Later with faith, all those he would save.

Wondrous his love and glorious his grace,
Perfect his plan for dead man--
So costly--dear-bought--His fathomless grace:
Jesus, slain lamb! Christ Jesus will save.

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places, even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him.  (From Ephesians 1:3-4 ESV)

Seated, Serving

Seated in the skyward realms
I have been redeemed, restored.
Yet I'm here beneath these elms
Sent to serve my living Lord.

Jesus' mind is mine, you see--
Both by Spirit and by word--
And I walk in service free,
Free as any flying bird.

Death's been killed, completely slain.
Life is here--rich, pulsing, strong,
Growing deep and firm and plain,
Flowing with an inward song.

God...made us alive together with Christ— by grace you have been saved—and raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus...
(Ephesians 2:4-6

The Word of the Lord

Lord, you spoke, and worlds sprang into being.
You spoke, and there was light.
You spoke, and there was life.

Your word is more powerful than we can imagine.
You had the prophet speak, and dead bones came together and lived.
Jesus spoke, and a dead girl lived.
He spoke, and dead Lazarus came forth alive.
Peter spoke, and dead Tabitha lived.

Today, you call us to speak the words of your gospel.
We speak, and dead hearts spring to life.
We speak, and stony hearts become new and pliable.
We speak, and spiritually dead people live.

The power is not in our personalities,
    Nor in our programs,
       Nor in our persuasive abilities.
It's in you and in your words that you've given us to speak.

Some, blinded by Satan, will hear without hearing,
But you, who gave the word, will speak life to some.

Lord, use your word.

For the word of God is living and effective and sharper than any two-edged sword, penetrating as far as to divide soul, spirit, joints, and marrow; it is a judge of the ideas and thoughts of the heart.
--Hebrews 4:12, HCSB

Lord, you found me filthy,
Singed and seared with sin.
Then you stripped me naked,
Washed me out and in.
You put clean clothes on me,
Vestments of your grace,
With the right to access
Your own holy place.

..."Remove the filthy garments from him." And to him he said, "Behold, I have taken your iniquity away from you, and I will clothe you with pure vestments."
--Zechariah 3:4

Break our hardened hearts
Find our Pharaohs and defeat them
Slice to heal, so we'll feel
Not numbed your truth

And answers come
Your will is done
Though now by fits, in bits, on earth
The day will dawn--who knows what year--
Night will fall
Away to endless day
But that's not yet

Fill us
     Will us
Wear us
     Tear us
If you must
But break our hardened hearts

And I will give you a new heart, and a new spirit I will put within you. And I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. And I will put my Spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes and be careful to obey my rules. (Ezekiel 36:26-27 ESV)

Prayer for the Church's Preaching

May the word be heard today...
Not just what some men would say,
But the word that comes from you,
Slicing hearts to make men new.

May the vacant ground be plowed
Through the preaching to the crowd
So that in each hearing heart
What was weak is set apart.

May that freshly hallowed ground
Se seeds grow, mature, abound
Till the victory is bright
And we shine with holy light.

No more seeking selfish sin.
Now's the day. Let life begin
As we kill the sinful past
And walk in your ways at last.

For since in the wisdom of God the world by its wisdom did not know God, God was pleased to save those who believe by the foolishness of preaching. (I Corinthians 1:21 NET)

Resisting Temptation

That old devil wants you dead--
Wants your heart and wants your head,
Wants to break whatever's whole
Till he rots your entire soul.
In the hot temptation hour,
You can't win by your own power.
Here's the deal, the truth I've heard:
He's defeated by God's word.
Use God's word, your shining sword.
You'll stay pure to serve your Lord.

In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one; and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God... (Ephesians 6:16-17 ESV)

...Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.  (James 4:7 ESV)

A Distant Train

A distant train,
A passing plane,
A rosy dawn,
A frozen lawn...
And all is well
(If I can tell).
This day's begun
Before the sun,
And I am glad.
Joy's to be had
Within each task.
O Lord, I ask
That your peace stays
And I bring praise
To honor you
In all I do.

So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.
(1 Corinthians 10:31 ESV)

Press On

Lay aside
All your pride.
Be on guard.
Follow hard.
Press to know
And to grow
In the Lord,
The one Lord.

Brothers, I do not consider that I have made it my own. But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.

Kingdoms rise and kingdoms fall...
Times of sickness, times of health,
    Times of poverty and wealth,
But the LORD is over all.

He will keep his chosen few...
    All who seek not wealth, not fame;
All who live in Jesus' name.
Though they die, they'll be made new.

It may seem sins just increase.
Do not fret though evil sways
    Multitudes to sing its praise,
Rest in Jesus. Be at peace.

...the Most High rules the kingdom of men and gives it to whom he will and sets over it the lowliest of men.  (Daniel 4:17 ESV)

The Preacher and The Devil's Dance

Millions, millions, dancing gaily down to hell—
    Some with ancient blasphemies,
    Some with pseudo pieties…
Dancing, dancing, millions under Satan’s spell!

See them, see them, trees all filled with toxic fruit
    Rotten to the very core—
    Seeking sin and finding more—
Dead men, dead men squabbling over stolen loot!

Warn them! Warn them! Tell them all they must repent,
Turn from self and lust and pride
    Turn to Jesus, then abide
Fruitful, Fruitful in the Savior whom God sent.

Urgent, urgent is the message that we preach!
Some may yet be saved today.
    Others hear and walk away
Listen! Listen! Are you one soul God will reach?

...He will clear his threshing floor and gather his wheat into the barn, but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire.
(Matthew 3:12 ESV) Read all of Matthew 3:1-12 at the link.

Like you, I prefer not to think about the Lord's judgment. However, the Bible makes clear that a judgment is coming. Be prepared. Turn from your sin. Turn to Jesus. Don't wait another hour.
